Company and Current Situation

On July 1, 2009, Larry Scott joined the Pacific-10 Conference as its sixth Commissioner, succeeding Tom Hansen who had been in the role the previous 26 years. Commissioner Scott, who executed a highly successful turnaround of the WTA Tour as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer prior to joining the Pac-10, is seeking to usher the “Conference of Champions” into a new era defined by innovation and commercial success. The Pac-10 brand aspires to be the leading collegiate athletic conference brand in the United States, and it will do so by establishing itself as the top source of West Coast collegiate athletic entertainment.

Position Summary

The webmaster will oversee the editorial and technical operation of Pac-10.org and also contribute to our long-range site strategy and planning. On the editorial side, the webmaster will need to understand the goals and objectives of Pac-10 fans and their passion for the Conference. As such, he/she will drive our efforts to produce, acquire, and present as much compelling content as possible, to the delight of our fans and users. The webmaster will also be involved in improving the user experience, using social media effectively, serving mobile users, increasing our audience substantially, and integrating the Pac-10’s content more deeply with our member school sites.

In partnership with our platform and content management provider, the webmaster will build and deploy pages onto the Pac-10.org domain, maintain all existing site content, oversee day-to-day management of the site, and assure quality and integrity of all site pages.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Act as the day-to-day point of contact for the platform vendor/partner, working with them to develop and implement the digital/website program, manage Pac-10 resources and relationships, and create and sustain a cooperative relationship between the two companies

2. Serve as primary point of contact during website redesign/re-platform and become proficient in CMS and vendor/partner’s related publishing and content management tools

3. Publish all traditional communications content to the web portal

a. Schedules, articles, stats, standings, blogs, etc. 

b. Troubleshoot technical problems and issues that arise during typical daily activities

c. Create new pages/containers as necessary to enable publishing of available content

4. Implement and execute on digital strategies as determined by the Pac-10 and vendor/partner

a. Social media networks

b. Mobile content distribution

c. Interactive blogs, video blogs, interviews, local interviews

d. Coordination of media days and Conference sponsored events that are opportunities to develop unique content for repurposing and distribution through the digital network (in tandem with PR and content creators)

5. Provide for communication and technical leadership with schools

a. Aggregation of content (i.e. highlight videos, game melts, coaches shows, live game feeds, stats, etc.

b. Approval of use of content and development of mobile apps, etc.

c. Create Conference institutional synergy and support for the Pac-10 digital strategy (in tandem with senior team members)

6. Work with vendor/partner to mutually determine Conference championship strategies (and other streaming opportunities) for coverage, highlights, and specialty programs that can enhance coverage of Olympic  Sport(s) championship events

7. When possible, write and/or edit features for the site, with careful attention to accuracy and tone

8. Strive to maintain best practices in accessibility and usability

9. Analyze traffic and usage reports with a focus on serving our users more effectively and increasing our audience

10. Collaborate with vendor/partner to conduct regular user testing and user surveys; use results to improve content and usability

11. Collaborate with PR Staff to oversee presence on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and other social media sites

12. Ensure consistent adherence to branding, visual, and style standards as well as compliance with applicable policies and legal requirements

13. Monitor web platform and site technical performance

Skills Required:

  • Proven webmaster/website management skills and experience
  • Strong web design skills and creative sensibility
  • A flexible, can-do attitude with proven experience working in a small independent team
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex sites featuring dynamic interaction, rich content, embedded forms, audio, video, and script objects
  • Proficiency with HTML, CSS, Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop, and Illustrator; other languages, environments, and standards desirable
  • Ability to identify and incorporate new Web technologies in support of business objectives
  • Excellent communications, organizational, project planning and time management skills with careful attention to detail
  • Solid understanding of the creative and production processes underlying the delivery of complex websites
  • Clearly demonstrating enthusiasm and passion for Web-related design, user experience, and technologies
  • Familiarity with and passion for college athletics
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required by sporting event coverage responsibilities
