Six Apart, the creators of Movable Type, TypePad, and Vox blogging platforms, is growing, and we're looking for a Network Engineer. As a member of the Operations team, the Network Engineer will be responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of a high-availability network infrastructure supporting top traffic, fast growing Internet sites.
Responsibilities include the following:
- Manage and improve a highly-available network infrastructure that spans our datacenter and four corporate offices world-wide
- Negotiate carrier and hardware support contracts with an eye towards lowering costs
- Manage BGP parameters to tune traffic according to cost and performance goals
- Available when needed as escalation point for network related issues
- Work as an educator as well as technical leader to people both within and outside the operations group
- Manage bandwidth monitoring/reporting tools to assist in financial modeling and forecasting
Required Skills
- 3-5 years professional experience as network administrator
- Successful experience designing, installing, and supporting networks across multiple sites with multiple providers
- Experience using BGP4 and OSPF in an ISP or hosting/content provider environment
- Strong proficiency in configuring, deploying, and troubleshooting all of the following networking/internet services: HTTP, DNS, TCP/IP, VPNs, VLANs, GRE tunnels, VIPs, ACLs, MSTP, Routing, Switching
- Significant experience with complex, high-volume networking architecture and detailed understanding of all levels of the OSI stack
- Good understanding of load balancing technologies
- Experience with any or all of Cisco, Foundry,Juniper, F5, or Force10 equipment
- Understanding of SNMP, SNMP traps and network monitoring tools such as Rancid, Cacti, Netflow, Nagios
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Must be highly organized and detail-oriented
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, conducive to team development
- Knowledge of a scripting language (ideally Bash or Perl) is desirable
- Understanding of web application development and architecture is desirable
- Experience with IPv6, GSLB, DSR load balancing, and VOIP is desirable
- Experience with open-source network solutions (OpenBGP, PF, etc) is desirable
