Responsibilities
Firedoglake is looking for an experienced web developer to lead the transition of our WordPress-powered blog into a social news website and political organizing platform. This person will lead the development of a custom implementation of BuddyPress, to create a social platform for the existing Firedoglake community.
We are seeking a candidate who is a software engineer first, and a web developer second, but who also understands and loves the web as a platform and a communication space. The candidate will ideally have a BA in computer science, or equivalent experience, and who has 4+ years in software development.
Experience
Expert in:
- Wordpress and Wordpress MU
- PHP
- MySQL
- Working with an SCM tool such as Subversion, Bazaar, or Git, to maintain and deploy software
- Working with unix-like operating systems (we run RHEL, CentOS, and Ubuntu)
- Working with separate staging and production hosting environments
- The architecture of the internet, and why it is a magic place
Comfortable with (expertise is a plus):
- BuddyPress or other social site platforms
- AJAX
- JavaScript
- CSS
Pluses:
- Previous experience building tools to parse XML and RSS feeds
- Affinity for test-driven development
- Strong collaboration and communication skills, both verbal and written for a non-technical audience
- Flash / ActionScript
- Familiarity with CRMs like Convio, Blue State Digital, Democracy in Action
- User Experience design
- Image production
Location
Anywhere (This is a remote position)
Compensation
$75,000 - 90,000 annual, commensurate with experience. Generous health care stipend also available.
